PAST CONTINUOUS/ PASADO CONTINUO

 PAST CONTINUOUS OR PAST PROGRESIVE / PASADO CONTINUO Ó PASADO PROGRESIVO 

The past continuous is a verb tense that is used to talk about an action from the past that has not yet finished when we refer to it. This verb tense is equivalent in Spanish to the verb form: I was eating, you were eating, he was eating, etc. / El past continuous es un tiempo verbal que se utiliza para hablar de una acción del pasado que todavía no ha finalizado cuando nos referimos a ella. Este tiempo verbal equivale en español a la forma verbal: yo estaba comiendo, tú estabas comiendo, él estaba comiendo, etc.

The key to recognizing it is when the main verb of the sentence has the ending -ing (-ando -endo in Spanish) and is accompanied by the auxiliary verbs was or were. / La clave para reconocerlo es cuando el verbo principal de la oración tiene la terminación -ing (-ando -endo en español) y se encuentra acompañado de los verbos auxiliares was o were. 

The "past continuous" describes actions or events located in a time before the present, whose beginning is in the past and which has not yet concluded at the moment of speaking. In other words, it expresses an incomplete or unfinished action from the past. / El "past continuous" describe acciones o eventos situados en un tiempo anterior al presente, cuyo comienzo se sitúa en el pasado y que todavía no ha concluido en el momento de hablar. Dicho de otro modo, expresa una acción incompleta o inconclusa del pasado.

1. Express actions or states that were taking place in the past when another action or state interrupts or reinforces it. / Expresar acciones o estados que estaban llevándose a cabo en el pasado cuando otra acción o estado la interrumpe o refuerza.	I was walking when I saw an eagle (Estaba caminando cuando vi un águila).
2. Offer context, that is, give information about facts or situations in a specific time. / Ofrecer contexto, es decir, dar información sobre hechos o situaciones en un tiempo específico.	Last year, I was studying for the exams (El año pasado, estaba estudiando para los exámenes)
3. Mention two or more actions from the past that happened at the same time. These actions are usually linked with the particles while (while) or when (when). / Mencionar dos o más acciones del pasado que sucedieron al mismo tiempo. Generalmente se enlazan dichas acciones con las partículas while (mientras) o when (cuando).	While my son was playing videogames, I was sleeping in his bedroom (Mientras mi hijo estaba jugando videojuegos, yo estaba durmiendo en su recámara).

💭😎👍NOTA: Remember that state verbs or state verbs (those that do not indicate an action but a state) are not usually used in continuous or progressive tenses, except in these cases. / Recuerda que los verbos de estado o state verbs (aquellos que no indican una acción sino un estado) no suelen utilizarse en tiempos continuos o progresivos, salvo en estos casos.

👍Para verbos de pensamiento y reflexión. Por ejemplo: She was regretting about her wedding. = Ella se estaba arrepintiendo de su boda.

👍Para el verbo feel. Por ejemplo: They were feeling bad until their mom arrived. = Ellos se estaban sintiendo mal hasta que llegó su mamá.
